Help Wanted

5 things you can do today:

  1. Talk to your kids about safety. Let them know they are allowed to defend themselves, that you trust their instincts, and remind them that a safe adult will never ask a kid for help, will never try to get them to come closer, get in the car, or keep a secret.

  2. Contact your local legislators and let them know that reasonable legislation to protect children from predators is a priority for you. Make a list of family-oriented businesses you frequent, and spend a few minutes finding out what security policies they have: do they keep a list of local offenders and have a security cameras in higher-risk areas [exits, restroom doors, etc]?

  3. Go to your PTA or other parent organization, and encourage them to take a look at the Take 25 program from NCMEC. If we all find 'teachable moments' in our daily lives to educate children about personal safety, we may be able to curb the horrifying numbers of children that are preyed upon each year.

  4. Secure your computers! Check out these quick tips from NetSmartz, and talk to your kids about it. Most importantly - don't send your kids online alone. Show them, guide them, and monitor them!

  5. Donate! Operating costs for 2008 are budgeted at $2570. That will cover websites, training, necessary consulting, and materials. We've received about $200 dollars in donations so far this year. Check out the Shop & Support page for ways to contribute to Wash-CAP's work.
