Safe Child Week

In observance of National Missing Children's Day

What it is - Prevention

On May 25, 1983, the first National Missing Children's Day was observed on the anniversary of the day Etan Patz disappeared while walking to school in New York.

Every year volunteers, advocacy groups, and law enforcement work to provide fingerprinting and photographing information for children in communities across the country, in case the worst should happen and they disappear. These ID events also act to focus attention on the issues of child abduction and crimes against children.

Safe Child Week is a week-long event to bring the 'prevention message' to every single child and care-giver in Washington state.

Washington is Stepping Up

If you look at the list of logos to the right, you'll see a portion of the organizations that have committed to helping the effort toward safer kids and communities.

The Attorney General, the PTA, Safe Streets - these are some of Washington State's powerhouses for creating change on behalf of kids. We're incredibly pleased and encouraged to have them on board, as well as the other excellent agencies that have also signed on.

Many organizations are still deciding how best to participate; we'll post more as plans are finalized.

There are a lot of kids and care-givers in Washington, and with the help of community leaders, employers, care providers, schools, organizations and dedicated volunteers, we'll reach every single one of them.

Every single kid deserves to feel safe.

Every single parent should know what the risks are, and how best to safeguard their children and family.

No one person knows it all - talk to your neighbors, talk to your community.
