Support Legislation

We make activism as easy as possible...

...but we can't make the bills go through. Not a single bill that we actively supported made it all the way through the session.

Some great bills were passed, and we say thank you to the legislators for those. However, if you go through the bills they prioritized, very few directly improve the safety of Washington's communities and families.

Clearly, we have another year of hard work ahead of us. In the column to the right, please see a partial list of our efforts for 2008/09 session.

Visit our 'Projects' page for more details on each of those efforts. Thank you!

Let your legislator know you support common sense legislation for safe kids and communities.

You can use the "Find Your Legislator/District" tool from the Washington Legislature.

Thank you to Representative Deb Eddy from the 48th for her hard work and dedication, quick responses and great sense of humor.

Thank you to Senator Val Stevens from the 39th for her hard work and commitment.

What happens in the interim?

We research legislative issues and current law and work toward consensus on priorities.

We'll listen to feedback from the community across Washington - but only if they talk! Send us an email and tell us what you think. You might even get an argument out of us.

We'll find legislators who share our priorities, and we'll work with them to create legislative proposals to take to the next legislative session.

Hope springs eternal... we really do think that we can create positive change for child and community safety in Washington.

We can't do it alone: Help Wanted.

Legislative efforts for 2008/09

  • Predatory Exposure - mandatory registration on the first conviction of Indecent Exposure with Sexual Intent directed at a minor under 15
  • Increased Penalty Zones -  Increased consequences for predatory crimes committed or attempted upon children within 500 feet of a public school or 100 feet of a bus stop.
  • Statute of Limitations on felony sex crimes committed upon children - still in discussion, but we're going to try and extend it by at least 5 years.
  • Safe Child  - security curricula for kids. Give kid the tools they need to be secure in their home, communities, and on the internet.
